Golf Tips

Improve your golf game with these easy-to-follow tips covering drivers, irons, and chipping techniques.

Driver Tips

1. Hit the Center of the Clubface

Practice Centered Hits: Use impact tape or place a small amount of powder on the clubface to check where you’re hitting the ball.

Consistent Contact: Aiming for the center increases distance and accuracy.

2. Neutral Grip

Align Clubface Straight: Ensure your grip keeps the clubface pointing directly at the target.

Avoid Grip Errors: A grip that’s too strong or weak can misalign the clubface.

3. Straight Swing Path

Swing Through the Gate: Imagine a gate and swing straight through it to maintain a straight path.

Improve Accuracy: A straight swing path reduces slices and hooks.

4. Proper Alignment

Pick a Close Target Point: Choose a spot a few feet in front of the ball to help align your shot.

Line Up Parallel: Your feet, hips, and shoulders should be parallel to the target line.

Iron Play

1. Ball Position

Set the Club First: Place the clubhead behind the ball before setting your stance.

Loftier Irons (Higher Number Irons):

• Take equal steps with both feet after setting the club.

Lower Loft Irons (Lower Number Irons):

• Take a slightly smaller step with your front foot to position the ball back.

2. Distance from the Ball

Hand Width Gap: Keep about a hand’s width between your waist and the end of the club.

Relaxed Arms: Let your arms hang straight down without reaching or crowding.

3. Body Movement

Avoid Leaning Back: Stay centered over the ball to ensure solid contact.

Downward Strike:

• Hit the ball first, then the ground.

• Execute a descending blow for crisp contact.

Forward Motion:

• Rotate around your left foot (for right-handed golfers).

• Twist your hips toward the target during the follow-through.

Chipping Techniques

1. Bump and Run with an 8-Iron

Grip Down on the Club: Improves control over the shot.

Narrow Stance: Feet close together for stability.

Maintain “Y” Shape:

• Keep your arms and club in a Y formation.

• Minimize wrist movement for consistency.

2. Chipping with a Wedge

Setup:

Weight Forward: Lean slightly toward your front foot.

Narrow Stance: Feet close together to control the swing arc.

Ball Position: Position the ball closer to or in front of front foot for higher, softer shot. Further back for more of a line drive.

Grip Down: Hold the club lower for better control.

Execution:

Sweeping Motion: Use a smooth, pendulum-like swing.

Adjust Loft if Needed:

• Open the clubface to add loft.

• Ideal for shots requiring a soft landing.
